Program

Objectives

There are a number of objectives this project should ultimately achieve. The first is that it should provide affordable, temporary accommodations for modern travelers that encourage engagement of the spaces they inhabit, fellow travelers, and the surrounding urban environment. This is not a hotel, rather it is a destination, a crack in the sidewalk for people who travel from place to place and plan to inhabit the city for a period of time, but a portion of the project could accommodate that as well.

Another objective is to activate both interior and exterior voids of the city and bring a layer of subculture and a unique sense of community to the growing urban fabric of San Diego, California. Last, and most important, there should be a space of celebration. This could be a public space in the daytime, but at night, it becomes the space in which to celebrate life.

Requirements

First, this project should have flexible living spaces that can be easily altered to fit the current users needs and be able to adjust for peak and off peak times of the year. It should also accommodate parking needs that can be opened to the public at different times of the year when usage is down. There should also be a laundry facility in its own space so it doesn’t interfere with the flexibility of the living units, but still provides the amenity onsite. This could also be a space that is open to the public.

A crucial requirement for this project is the space of celebration. What is unique about this space is that it happens at night. During the day, it can be a public space where the inhabitants and locals can exchange goods, services, and culture. At night, this space will transform into a place where people celebrate art, music, culture, and ideas.
